all natural gas lines ac avoiding the next catastrophe the state steps in and orders pg&e to inspect all natural gas lines across the state. good evening. some reassurance to some who wonder and worry that their neighbourhood could become ground zero for another pipeline explosion. some san bruno residents were allowed to go home. the red dots show the 37 homes destroyed, yellow dots houses that suffered major damage, blue is damaged but not seriously. a number of families were allowed to return to their homes today. more in a few minutes but right now, the latest on the pipeline investigation. don. >> reporter: that's right. they wrapped up their second day of imvest gas with a news conference about an hour and five minutes ago. they want to disallow anyone from thinking of the idea they are not going to have a report for a year to a year and a half. they said upfront if they find

anything significant relating to safety or other facts they will release them right away. lit take a year to year and a half for a full comprehensive report. they also talked what they did. one of that is taking a hunk of pipe and shipping it back to washington. >> i mentioned previously, a 28- foot section of pipe that was blown out of the ground, blown about 100 feet, and sitting on the street. that piece of pipe, that 28- foot section of 30-inch pipe, we are as we speak crating it up, because the investigators have decided that needs to go back to our metalargy labs in washington. we have heard numerous instances from claims people reported smelling gas but had no response to those reports. so far in our collection of data from the various sources that we are looking to for that, we are not able to find instances of people who

reported an odour, and we would ask anybody who says they reported smelling gas, to contact us. we are learning more about the gas line the ruptured segment was in a high consequence area. this according to puc documents according to the associated press. pg&e said the line was slated to be replaced. they said the company is proactive to repairing equipment when needed. a few miles away, a section was among the top 100 line risk sections in pg&es territory puc documents show. today they ordered pg&e to inspect its natural gas system including its assessment of a natural gas pipeline and areas of highest density. the order was prompted by the

lieutenant governor's request for investigations. >> anyone with information who wants to e-mail the ntsb is asked to use this e-mail address. sanbruno@ntsb.gov. this day was an important day because for a lot of folks since the blast they have been locked out of the area. this was a chance to get back in our cbs 5 julie watts went in with them. >> i have to go up to claire mount. >> just drive slow. >> thank you. >> reporter: unlike the dozens of others returning to their homes for the fierce time since the gas pipe explosion. gerry knew what to expect. >> just like i left it. >> reporter: because he spent the night there thursday after the explosion, just six houses down. >> the fire was right behind that tree. >> reporter: these are the images he captured from his front lawn but instead of evacuating like everyone else, once the gas was turned off

>> i didn't think there would be any more bang bang explosions going on. so i went to bed. i didn't sleep that good but i went to bed and then i get up in the morning and i find out i am sitting in a crime scene. >> reporter: at that point, he was forced to evacuate but not before capturing a few more pictures. >> have you seen your car? >> reporter: pictures that came in handy when he reunited with neighbors as they waited for the go ahead to return home. >> we will be sending people back in waves according to time. >> reporter: for many the first confirmation friends had survived the blast. >> this is my neighbor across the street >> i know thank god you are okay. >> how are you? >> reporter: but for every happy reunion there was the memory of those who won't return home. >> i knew the two corner houses down there, i knew those two ladies. i used to walk my dog down there past her house all the time. the lady on the right, she had a wonderful garden, she took a

lot of pride in her yard. >> reporter: that yard is now gone along with 26 others. the owners of these homes will find out tomorrow when they get to return to see the destruction first hand. in the meantime pg&e trucks lined the streets of this san bruno neighbourhood, the company is providing dumpsters for spoiled food, they are stationed on every corner to answer questions returning residents might have. there is one question they can't yet answer, how could this have happened. >> reporter: pg&e said tonight contrary to what we have been told by neighbors, they have no records of any phone calls reporting the smell of gas in the days leading up to the explosion. that angered some residents we talked to that say not only did they call when they saw pg&e crews out early last week they are now asking anyone with specific information about those calls to done contact them as soon as possible. of the six people still

reported missing two were located alive today. the coroner is once again saying there are four confirmed fatalities, jaclyn greg and her 13-year-old daughter janessa and 20-year-old jessica morales the fourth victim is not yet identified. as far as remains that have been located, we are in the process of doing forensic tests. >> the coroner says while more remains were found, it is not clear if they are from victims already accounted for no word how long it might take to identify them. a teenager his father and grandmother are among the missing according to family members, 50-year-old greg, his 16-year-old son william and elderly mother have not been seen or heard from since the explosion. their house was among the dozens destroyed. prayers for the family from their fellow parishioners at their church, one of several bay area congregations dealing with the pain of losing members. elizabeth wenger on how one young member and her mother

were remembered today ♪ [ music ] ♪ >> reporter: at st. cecilia catholic church in san francisco the congregation gathered for sunday mass minus two. >> we have been parishioners here for 15 years and it has just been a very difficult time for obviously the community, and the children in the class of janessa. >> reporter: 13-year-old janessa greg and her mother jaclyn who died in the gas explosion that ripped through their san bruno neighbourhood. this devastated her classmates some who have known her since kindergarten. >> i think a lot of people were shocked and my opinion like i couldn't even cry like the tears wouldn't come out because i was crying before like when i heard she was missing. >> reporter: she was an 8th grader, student body president and active in many school clubs. she would have been an altar server at this sunday's service. >> she gave her whole being to

overnight crash that killed two people on the peninsula. police >> alcohol is suspected in an overnight crash that killed two people on the peninsula. police say 39-year-old stacy white of san mateo was driving southbound in the northbound lane, hillsdale boulevard before 3:00 a.m. she was killed. a second person, 26-year-old steven of titusville florida died when he got out of his car to help. 101 was partly shut down both directions for nearly 15 hours they just reopened in the last

half hour. >> berkly grad detained in iran with her fiance and friend may be coming home this week. sarah her fiance shane and friend joshua have been jailed for more than a year for spying. they will release her on a half million dollars bail because of health problems. five members of an oakland church are held in zimbabwe. two doctors, two nurses and another are being held in harare and expected to be in court tomorrow arrested thursday accused of illegally dispensing medicine. they were carrying donated aids drugs, a mission they have performed several times a year since 2000. >> summer seems to be hanging on in parts of the bay area but what is in store for the week ahead. the pinpoint forecast ahead ,,,,,,
